I rarely bother writing or even reading reviews about cigars as I already know what I like and don't like and figure nobody wants to listen to my crack-pot opinions anyways. I figured this could be an exception however, as it is a fairly rare and unique smoke with a fairly rare and unique experience. History: About four years ago, I had a friend who lived in the Balkans, specifically Albania. Before you ask, no, he does not live there anymore, so no more 681s for me sadly! At the time I was crazy with regionals, buying every regional I could find in as much quantity as I could afford. My favorite marca for years has been Bolivar, so naturally Bolivar Regional Editions were always high on my list. On a whim I reached out to my buddy and asked if he was close to one of the shops in the region that I knew carried the cigar. I offered to pay for his bus/train/taxi and even pay the shop directly for a box, but he told me that he was nowhere near any shop and he just didn't have the time. I completely understood and dropped it. A few months later, was my wedding day. The week before the big day, I received a package waiting for me at the post office. I was on a buying freeze so I had no idea what it was. Shipped from Toronto, I was very confused. Upon opening the package I saw two boxes of Bolivar 681s and a very nice note from my friend wishing me congrats on my upcoming nuptials! Wow, needless to say I was blown away and very appreciative. After speaking with my buddy, he explained that he had an employee heading to Toronto to visit family and he asked the travelling employee to post the box once in Canada. Smart man! It was actually a full box and 8 in the second box and apparently these were the last that this particular shop had with no more coming in. Excited to get the boxes, but super busy with wedding stuff, I just jam them in the back of the humi and forget about them for a month or two. Christmas vacation of that year and I decide to inspect and catalogue my cigars. Found a touch of mold here and there on various sticks, no plume...lol....wiped, rotated and stuffed back in. No problems. Get to the 681 boxes and while the full box is still sealed, I decide to give the partial box a gander. Take all the sticks out and inspect. HOLY BEETLE HOLE BATMAN! One single cigar has one single hole in it. FUCKNUGGET! Smoked that beetle cigar that very night (one of the best cigars of my life, no joke. Just amazing). Kept the rest of that particular box in double ziplock and segregated from the rest of my stock. Box was tossed in a pile of empty boxes that I have after a good vacuuming. Needless to say, I kept a very close eye on the other 681s for a long time. Nothing. Perfect for half a decade. Current situation: A few weeks ago, I started transferring my cigars from coolers and cabinet to a bigger space. I decided to do a quick inspection of particular cigars. Of course the 681s were on my list to check. Now I am not anal about specific temp and rh numbers, but I am anal about minimum and maximum limits. My humidors have NEVER been above 70 degrees or 70% rh. Ever. Sure enough, of the four 681s I had left from that partial box, one had fucking holes in it again! Motherless piece of shit fuckhead! No dead bugs in ziplocks and only the one cigar affected. So I changed bags, sucked out as much air as possible, kept that one cigar in quadruple bags and separated from everything else. Had a chance to smoke it today. ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL CIGAR! I don't know if beetle shit adds delicious flavours, or the holes those assholes make the draw better or whatever....two for two beetle eaten cigars have been great! That's it. Not really a review, more a story I guess. At least I rated the cigar as "great" so maybe that qualifies this as a review. Moral of the story, smoke the beetle holed cigars you may have, and certainly don't give up on moldy sticks either!
