Today, most have reopened their doors, and cigars are once again flowing into distribution channels. The factories aren\u2019t the same as they were before, however, and many have instituted changes to keep their workers safe as the virus continues to be felt around the globe, having claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. To find out what\u2019s going on around\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cigaraficionado.com\/article\/a-virtual-tour-of-cigar-factories-and-fields\">the cigar-producing world<\/a>, we spoke to a host of cigarmakers, covering factories from Santiago to Estel\u00ed, from Havana to Miami.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Dominican Republic<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Arturo Fuente<\/strong><br \/>\nAfter roughly two months of closure, Arturo Fuente\u2014one of the world\u2019s largest makers of handmade cigars\u2014resumed production on May 11. \u201cEverybody\u2019s wearing masks, everybody is far from each other,\u201d said Ciro Cascella, chief executive officer of Fuente. \u201cWhen they come in, we take the temperature. When they go out, we take the temperature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cigaraficionado.com\/article\/carlos-fuente-jr-and-the-cigar-factory\">Carlos Fuente Jr.<\/a>, who owns and runs Fuente, has been expanding all of his operations for the past few years. That expansion means the company has plenty of presently unused space, allowing the cigar company to spread out its workforce and put empty rows between workers who would typically sit close together.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tabacalera de Garcia<\/strong><br \/>\nTabacalera de Garcia Ltd.,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cigaraficionado.com\/article\/a-walking-tour-of-tabacalera-de-garcia-the-dominican-s-largest-cigar-factory\">one of the world\u2019s largest cigar factories<\/a>, was shut down from March 20 to April 6. \u201cWe started on a small scale when we reopened,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cigaraficionado.com\/article\/sitting-down-with-rafael-nodal-17680\">Rafael Nodal<\/a>, head of product capability for Tabacalera USA. He said the company has been ramping up production gradually since that time, but it\u2019s still not operating at full capacity. \u201cWe have a phased plan to get back to our original capacity following the local protocol and requirements,\u201d said Nodal.<\/p>\n<p>The factory, which is located in La Romana, near the southeastern end of the Dominican Republic, is operating with new measures aimed at keeping workers safe, including distancing, additional cleaning and personal protective equipment. \u201cTherefore the general appearance and procedures in the factory have changed,\u201d said Nodal, \u201cand are now part of our current business as usual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cigaraficionado.com\/article\/cigar-factories-around-the-world-reopen-after-closing-for-pandemic\">Read more&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Posted on: June 5, 2020 By\u00a0CA Editors &nbsp; Many of the world\u2019s handmade cigar factories were\u00a0forced to shut down during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic.
