On Tuesday, March 17, it imposed a seven-day shutdown on nonessential business, and that includes cigar factories. The shutdown means a halt to production for the third-leading exporter of premium cigars to the United States, a nation that ships 60 to 70 million handmade cigars a year to the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Honduras also ordered all borders (air, land and sea) to be closed for a week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Honduras, the government ordered all companies to close for seven days,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cigaraficionado.com\/article\/qa-nestor-andres-plasencia-of-plasencia-tobacco-19123\">Nestor Andr\u00e9s Plasencia<\/a>, who owns cigar factories in Honduras as well as in neighboring Nicaragua. \u201cWe hope that next Monday we can start again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christian Eiroa, owner of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cigaraficionado.com\/company\/cle-cigar-co\">C.L.E. Cigar Co.<\/a>, is also directly affected by the country\u2019s lockdown. He grows tobacco and produces cigars in Honduras and echoes Plasencia\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government shut down all operations in all industries except for health and food,\u201d said Eiroa. \u201cIt is being reviewed every seven days. We should have an update Friday or Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The shutdown could potentially have a heavy impact on companies like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cigaraficionado.com\/company\/altadis-u-s-a-inc\">Altadis U.S.A.<\/a>, which produces cigars at its Flor de Copan factory;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cigaraficionado.com\/company\/general-cigar-co\">General Cigar Co.<\/a>, which produces\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cigaraficionado.com\/brand\/punch-non-cuban\">Punch<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cigaraficionado.com\/brand\/hoyo-de-monterrey-non-cuban\">Hoyo de Monterrey<\/a>\u00a0in Honduras;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cigaraficionado.com\/brand\/alec-bradley\">Alec Bradley<\/a>, which has cigars made under contract at the Raices Cubanas factory; and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cigaraficionado.com\/article\/controlling-interest-17598\">Rocky Patel<\/a>, who produces a large number of his cigars at one of Plasencia\u2019s factories in El Paraiso, Honduras.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cigaraficionado.com\/article\/covid-19-cigar-factories-react-to-viral-outbreak\">Read more&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Posted on: March 17, 2020 By:\u00a0Gregory Mottola &nbsp; With now 12 confirmed cases of the Coronavirus, Honduras isn\u2019t taking any chances.
